Overview of 23andMe DNA Results

In this post I will be talking about my 23andMe DNA results. Later on I plan to make several blog posts going more in dept with functions and features of 23andMe and how they may be useful for your genealogy research. Back in September I shared with you a blog post titled “23andMe DNA Kit Received, Done, and Returned” in it I detailed the contents of the kit. If you are planing to test with them make sure to check it out.

Now, lets talk about my 23andMe DNA results.

I sent in my kit in to 23andMe on September the 19th and on October the 30th I finally got my results. Not bad, they only took about a month and a half.

Just like Ancestry and FamilyTreeDNA, 23andMe also provides you with yoru ethnic breakdown. Of course ti is different than the other two and the diffenrence is based on the differnet testign populations that they hav ein their databases.

My Ethnicity Simple Report

When I opened their “Ancestry Composition” report this is what I saw.

Detailed Ethnicity Report

I then clicked on “See all 31 Tested Populations” and got the following detailed overview of my ethnic breakdown.

There you have it.

My Maternal Haplogroup

What I liked about 23andMe is that it provided me with my maternal Haplogroup and it turned out to be D1.

Maternal Haplogroup

D1 is one of five Native American haplogroups. 23andMe goes on to state that thsi group is about 45,000 years old.

My Paternal Haplogroup

They also provided me with my paternal haplogroup which turned out to be R1b1b2a1a.

Paternal Haplogroup

This particular result turns out to be European. 23andMe claims that thsi gorup is 17,000 years old.

Of course the age of the groups are estimates and don’t forget that they are subgroups of much older groups.

My Genealogical Results

From what i can tell you 23andMe does not provide you matches based on your Maternal or Paternal haplogroups.

It seems that all your DNA matches are based on your autosomal results. Turns out that i have 1763 matches based on my DNA.

The closes matches to me indicate that we may be 2nds cousins. So far I did find a match that was labeled as 3rd cousins and it turned out that we are actually third cousins.

I already had his mother on my family tree whom was a second cousin of my father.

Let me know what you think about my results. You can leave your comments in the comment section below.

    1. No, it is not your browser. None of the images in the posts from November and December show up. Either he copied the URL for the images wrong or forgot to change a setting to allow them to be viewed by others.

  1. Not seeing the images either on Safari iPhone browser.

On the 3rd cousin, was it correct because maybe there were no pedigree collapse? So no concentration of DNA ?
